Why Cooking Is One of the Best Learning Activities for Children

Why Cooking Is One of the Best Learning Activities for Children

On a quiet Saturday afternoon, Aisha stood in the kitchen wearing an apron that looked slightly too big for her.

On the counter sat a bowl of flour, two eggs, and a tablet carefully propped up beside the ingredients. Every few seconds, she glanced at the screen, then back at the bowl in front of her.

“Add one cup of flour,” the cheerful voice from the tablet instructed.

Aisha carefully scooped the flour, spilling a little on the counter before pouring the rest into the bowl. She paused, looked at the mess, and giggled.

Her mother watched from across the kitchen, resisting the urge to step in too quickly.

Because although it looked like they were simply baking together, something much bigger was happening.

Aisha was learning.

Not the kind of learning that comes from memorising notes or repeating answers in class. This was different. She was thinking, experimenting, making decisions, and figuring things out for herself.

As she followed the recipe step by step, she counted measurements out loud. She asked questions about why the mixture changed when water was added. She learned that too much flour made the batter thick and difficult to stir.

Without realising it, she was exploring maths, science, problem-solving, and creativity all at once.

And the most beautiful part?

She was enjoying every second of it.

For many parents, learning still looks like sitting quietly at a desk with books open. But children often learn best when they are actively involved in what they’re doing.

That’s why moments like these matter so much.

The kitchen becomes a classroom.
The recipe becomes a lesson.
The mistakes become part of the learning process.

Developmental experts like Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky believed children learn best through hands-on experiences and guided interaction. Children need opportunities to explore, ask questions, and apply what they learn in real situations.

And sometimes, that learning happens while whisking cake batter.

Of course, today’s children are growing up in a very different world from the one many parents knew. Technology is now part of everyday life, and naturally, many learning experiences begin on a screen.

The challenge is making sure those digital experiences actually support development.

That’s what Aisha’s mother appreciated about ElimuTab.

Instead of endless distractions or passive entertainment, the tablet guided her daughter through fun, engaging activities that encouraged curiosity and independent thinking.

To Aisha, it felt like play.

But while she mixed ingredients and followed instructions, she was also:

  • practising concentration,
  • strengthening memory,
  • solving problems,
  • and building confidence in herself.

The screen wasn’t replacing real-world learning.

It was helping bring it to life.

A few minutes later, Aisha proudly placed the cake tin into the oven and turned to her mother with flour on her cheeks and excitement in her eyes.

“Did I do it right?” she asked.

Her mother smiled.

Because the truth was, this moment had never really been about baking the perfect cake.

It was about helping a child discover that learning can be joyful, practical, creative, and real.

And sometimes, the most important lessons children learn don’t happen in classrooms at all.

Sometimes, they begin in kitchens; one messy spoonful at a time.
